M-ITI EXPANSION

We were commissioned by M-ITI – Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute, to design the interiors expansion of level -1 located in the facilities of Madeira Tecnopolo. The project intends to improve the working conditions for researchers and collaborators, without changing the existing structure of the building. The lab spaces are to remain on the existing level -2, whilst open plan, shared workspaces and conference facilities are proposed to be accommodated on the new floor above.

Being a space for shared knowledge and experiences, the proposal combines informal break-out spaces, stylish workspaces, inspiring meeting areas and offices. It also promotes a collaborative work ethic and allows for special events, workshops and training.

The use of louvered timber profiles, individually CNC cut on site, are introduced to create acoustic barriers between open plan spaces, whilst maintaining translucence and fluidity between them. Individual meeting areas are enclosed in semi-translucent polycarbonate membranes, maintaining privacy when required whilst keeping the integral space as a whole.
