As part of Funchal’s initiative to make the city more accessible and friendly to pedestrians, we were invited to design the new street furniture located on Rua Fernão de Ornelas and on Largo do Phelps – the city’s main commercial artery.
Inspired by local traditional patterns found on the sidewalk, the design intends to interact with its users, creating places to sit, rest and contemplate. As the street begins to incline, the benches adapt and form a stepped solution. Finished in local basalt stone, it gives the impression of a levitating block, a feature enhanced by the recessed lighting at night.
Our intervention culminates at Largo do Phelps, located at the top of Rua Fernão de Ornelas, where a more sculptural design form wraps around two existing trees, creating an opening that invites the user to sit and contemplate in the shade.
